Happy Father's Day!

oh my goodness, it's been a few months, hasn't it

Apologies for the complete radio silence on my end, lack of updates, artwork and the sporadic posting on my socials.

I've been busy working on animation for the indie show, Mammal Squad for the past three-and-a-half months, particularly episode 3, so I couldn't really focus on making new artwork. (that and social media's been kind of stressful, irl stuff has been getting in the way too.)

It was a long few months, nearly got delayed due to production woes, but I am so glad we all pulled through to get it released right on time.

The episode is out today, and you can watch it right NOW!

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, and/or haven't seen the show yet, Mammal Squad is a show created by Leah H. (MoonToon) about animal people and their adult struggles living in NYC. A more mature "Zootopia" if you will. I've voluntarily worked on Episode 2, where I animated scenes with Koey the Koala, and Lika (leek-ah) the Weed Fox. (can you guess why she's the fan favorite)

Please, support the original creator, MoonToon! Many thanks for her having me help out on the show!

Other than that, I've made a few tweaks around my website, the commission terms have been updated for this year. Please check in the commissions page, in the Terms of Service button to review it. With the way the job market is these days, I plan on seriously pushing my Ko-Fi page more, so if you're interested in buying a commissioned piece from me, don't hesitate to ask! I am still looking for work, so it's not like I'm giving up on job hunting, I just want something to fall back on, besides my regular part-time job, anyways.

That's all I have for now, I still have a few things I want to tweak here and there around the site, but for now, I hope you enjoy the episode, and I'll catch up with you next time.

The Day The Earth Blew Up (review)

03-25-25

Hi, this is my first ever movie review on this site, also posting to my personal site as well. I did mention wanting to do reviews before, if you've read my second blog post on my own site. So, I thought I'd give it a try.

This past weekend, I grabbed a friend and watched The Day The Earth Blew Up with him, in an almost empty theater. (mostly due to lack of advertising.)

It was AMAZING. Really proves that 2D animation can still work in a theatrical setting!

iu_1373888_6992751.webp

Summary

If you're curious what this movie's about, I don't blame you, the advertising's been kinda doo-doo. So, here's a quick summary.

Daffy and Porky are unemployed, and need to find a job to fix their house before they get booted. After numerous failed attempts to land a job, they meet Petunia Pig at the diner, where she gives them a job opportunity at the bubble gum factory, which was perfect for them. But then Daffy uncovers an alien conspiracy where the gum is actually taking over people's minds, and chewing it causes them to turn into mindless zombies as part of an extra-terrestrial invasion scheme. Now the three need to stop the invasion before the Earth blows up!

Impressions

The animation's as great as ever, replicating the Bob Clampett style similarly to the old shorts, the jokes just kept on coming, and they hit every single time, on top of all the layers of comical plot twists that threw us for a loop! Not to mention this being the theatrical debut of the same guy who created Uncle Grandpa, Pete Browngardt, who also directed the Looney Tunes Cartoons shorts from 2020. You can see his brand of wacky humor shine through!

It's incredible how he went from Secret Mountain Fort Awesome to Uncle Grandpa (criminally underrated show)... to eventually making some of the funniest Looney Tunes shorts in years and finally bringing the Looney Tunes in its purest form to the big screen, no live action, no big celebrity cameos, not even a clip show framed as a "movie" (i.e, Quackbusters), just a FULL ON ORIGINAL LOONEY TUNES MOVIE.

(also if you're specifically worried about that daffy duck twerking scene, don't worry, that's the cringiest it gets, nothing more than trailer fodder. the rest of the movie is comedy gold)

A little history lesson...

I've been looking forward to this movie coming out since it was announced several years ago, and for a bit of background-- this movie was originally going to premiere on the late night movie block, ACME Night on Cartoon Network in 2022. But it got pulled at the last second got shopped around to different streaming services, but no one was biting, even when they retitled it as Bubble Brains at some point. (probably to make the title sound less ominous a younger audience?) The film nearly got shelved like what happened with ACME Vs. Coyote, set to be thrown in the Warner Bros. vault, but thankfully, a distributor was able to swoop in and acquire the distribution rights to the film and give it a limited run in select theaters... and then they eventually gave it a wider release on March 14th!

It's genuinely a miracle this movie even came out at all, and I applaud everyone involved in this film for their great work!

There's also been talks about the distributor (Ketchup Entertainment) working out a deal with WBD to acquire the distribution rights to that previously cancelled film, ACME Vs. Coyote, so we'll see if anything good comes from that.

Final notes

I just wish it got way more advertising than it did, this seriously deserved far more beyond word of mouth.

I fully recommend it to animation geeks (like me), fans of the Looney Tunes cartoons, and generally, people looking for a good laugh.

It's also a great send-off to the Looney Tunes Cartoons shorts that premiered on HBO Max, which ended its run of shorts just last year.

Thanks for reading my first attempt at a review, and please check out this film in theaters if you can.

(it would be better worth your time than watching some repackaged nostalgia schlock remade beat for beat into live action...)

These are just starting prices for now. Prices may be subject to change in the future.

Also finally updated my website for the first time in a while.

...yeah i'll admit, this year was pretty slow in the art department, with my motivation kinda being up and down, but even with the pieces i've mustered up already, scattered throughout the year, i can say i'm proud of em!

new year's resolution? ...to ACTUALLY DRAW.

https://jpixel.neocities.org/

after working on it on and off for weeks, MONTHS since graduating, i FINALLY finished working on my personal site after spending the past few weeks tweaking it, doing the final touches and stuff, it's all ready to go.

it's pretty light-weight, made from scratch by yours truly.

i may add some more stuff in the future, maybe downloadables, character bios, and a blog to write to, but for now? i'm just glad i have a place to put everything in one single spot.

hope you like what you see here, and don't hesitate to leave me some feedback!

hello, long time no see

great news- i finally got a NEW PC

iu_1271752_6992751.webp

the reason for this is because i was gifted a Kamvas 13 drawing tablet as a graduation gift, but it didn't work very well with the PC i've been using this whole time, kept locking up on me and crashing, so i had to search for a more powerful PC capable of running two screens at a time

this was a very long time coming, i kept trying to order a few i had my eyes on from Walmart, but the PCs never came, which was really frustrating, then i kept waiting for certain PCs to go down in price, and the ones i looked at kept going out of stock, until finally, i settled with this big tank from Amazon, the Panorama RTX 4060 TI Gaming PC Desktop

aside from having to upgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10, (yes. upgrade.) it runs pretty good! all i have to do now is move all my stuff over to the other PC and it should be smooth sailing from there!

and now for the personal stuff (you can ignore if you really don't want to hear me yapping.)

since graduating, i've been trying to find a decent job to get into, that's at least close to my field of study, that pays better than my current job, and doesn't require anything higher than an associates degree.

90% of the creative jobs i've looked at are for companies nobody's ever heard of, AI animation jobs (ew.), or really good jobs that i would apply to if it weren't for the fact that it requires a BACHELOR'S DEGREE

so i kind of felt demotivated tbh, it's kinda taken a toll on me

asking for the creatives, do you have any tips on getting a job as a creative with only an Associates in Art degree? i would really appreciate it.

also,

I'M STARTING A KO-FI PAGE.

iu_1271753_6992751.webp

it's still a WIP at the moment, but now you can support me through Ko-Fi!

I plan on taking commissions through this, so definitely keep an eye out for those!

but anyways, yeah i apologize if i keep disappearing for several months, kinda bad at keeping up with my socials, that and trying to keep my motivation up with the whole job search thing. but if you're looking for somewhere i'm actually somewhat active on, check out my Bluesky! they've recently rolled out video support, so i've been putting out my shorter animations and stuff there. and that's about it, see you around!
